HILL COTTAGE, Somerset
The village of Stawell Stawell is a tiny village lying in a south facing fold of the Polden Hills which run from near Bridgwater to Street and Glastonbury. It is an ancient village being recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. It has been a farming community being particularly well known for its fruit. Our facilities are limited to a Church and a village hall but within just a mile or two are several lovely country pubs and restaurants. Somewhat surprisingly the nearest restaurant specialises in Mediterranean cuisine. If there is an event on at the village hall during your stay do try to attend as you will be welcomed get to meet lots friendly people. Our neighbours are all very friendly and will be happy to help, advise and even take you out to visit the local pubs. Just a word of warning, Somerset is reknowned for its rough farmhouse cider; besides being an acquired taste it is also VERY strong and many have lived (just) to regret their experiments with our local brew. We have lots of Ordnance Survey maps and books with local walks described. These will guide you on an excellent way to explore our locality - on foot, using the excellent network of local paths and bridleways. Alternatively use the bicycles in the garage and travel the local lanes across the flat Somerset Levels. For shopping you will need to drive. We tend to use supermarkets in either Bridgwater or Street - both about 15 minutes away. For greater choice Taunton has all the main chain stores and facilities of a large town. A very worthwhile trip is to go to Wells with its twice weekly (Wednesday and Saturday) market. Also a good idea to look out for farmers markets for the best of the excellent local produce.
